Abstract

Wagner composed his Overture to Goethe's Faust, 1st Part, in January, 1840, after he had attended a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at Paris in 1839 which had made a tremendous impression on him and no doubt influenced the writing of the Overture.
