Abstract
A variation of the traditional tune Sellinger's Round appears somewhere in each of the five movements. (A version by Byrd is also in the first). Incorporated in the music are short quotations from Gibbons, Purcell, Arne, Field and Sullivan.
A single woodwind instrument playing in the 'forte' is taken to equal the f of a single group of strings, eg. Flute=1st Violins, Bassoon=Cellos, etc. The string body must therefore be proportionate. Further, the trumpet and horn are taken to be roughly equivalent in the f, both to themselves and to each of the woodwind instruments. The line of the trumpet and horn must therefore be proportionately balanced in the performance.
