Abstract
This overture is about the only work by Hamish MacCunn (1868 - 1916) which is still performed, although he wrote operas, vocal, choral and instrumental music as well as other orchestral works. It has a distinctly Scottish flavour and was used as the theme to the BBC Television series "Sutherland's Law" back in the 1970s.
Hamish MacCunn was the son of a shipowner. He was born in Greenock but moved to London at the age of 15 when he gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Music. After college he became a conductor and alos taught harmony and composition privately and at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music.
